CityNet-UNESCAP SDG City Awards

The annual awards program of the Urban SDG Knowledge Platform, the CityNet-UNESCAP SDG City Awards has been running since 2022 to promote knowledge sharing of innovative best practices in sustainable urban development. Each year, new competition categories are selected among in-demand urban issues to spur cities to contribute policies and practices on the most pressing problems cities are facing. Cities can utilize the recognized cases as models for their own (re)development by replicating them within their city. In line with the mission of the Platform, the submitted practices are judged by how well they localize the Sustainable Development Goals in local urban contexts. Importantly, the awards seek to celebrate and shine a spotlight on the work that actors at the local government level do to make cities sustainable, inclusive, and more livable.

ELIGIBILITY

Cities, national, local, and regional governments, organisations, and other stakeholder institutions may contribute cases to the awards program. Regardless of submitting body, all submitted case studies must be urban / city-based policies or programs to be eligible for the awards. To be eligible, case studies must be relevant to at least one of the annual categories. Candidates may submit a new case study or choose a case study that has been uploaded to the Urban SDG Knowledge Platform’s Case Study Database within the past year. Please note that only submissions from ESCAP members may be eligible for the awards. Click here to access the full list of ESCAP members.

PRIZE

Winners will be invited to the CityNet-ESCAP SDG City Awards Ceremony, held in conjunction with impactful urban forums, usually in the fourth quarter of any given year. Besides being recognized at the ceremony with a trophy, winners are invited to share their best practice with assembled urban stakeholders. In the following year, winners also have the opportunity to attend a sponsored capacity building event hosted by CityNet where they can exchange knowledge with other winners and key decision-makers in sustainable urban development.
